Doubtless Scalia would have agreed with those Frenchmen just over a century ago, that it was as well that Captain Alfred Dreyfus should endure the torments of Devil’s Island (for the alleged crime of espionage) even if he were proven to be innocent, than that the French state could ever be seen to be wrong.
