Meet the staff
Sister Helen Prejean
Sister Helen is the public face of the Ministry Against the Death Penalty. She spends most of her time giving speaking engagements across the USA and internationally, teaching people about the realities of the death penalty and encouraging people to educate themselves on the issue. When she’s not on the road, she takes time to work on her third book, River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey.
Elizabeth keeps a watchful eye on our organizational activities and provides a link between the staff and the Ministry Against the Death Penalty’s board.
Sister Margaret Maggio
Sister Margaret handles all the details for Sister Helen’s speaking engagements. If you organize an event, Sister Marg’s is the voice on the end of the phone. She’s been working alongside Sister Helen since the early ’90s and, like Sister Helen, is a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph.
Carolyn works closely with Sister Margaret, organizing Sister Helen’s speaking schedule and taking care of Sister Helen’s voluminous email.
Rose looks after the technology for the Ministry Against the Death Penalty, everything from managing equipment to creating and managing our websites and social media presence. She also takes care of our many special projects.
Griffin is our social media content manager and works with the Ministry Against the Death Penalty’s partner organizations on strategic activism projects. He is a law student at the University of Michigan.
Tom is in charge of getting copies of Sr. Helen’s books, Dead Man Walking and The Death of Innocents, into the hands of event organizers. He stores the books, packs them, ships them out and receives any returns of unsold books from events. Book sales help fund our work, so it’s a vital job.
